Bad behaviors

I have more than a few bad habits.  An incident, which occurred at some point this very morning, highlighted a few of these and brought the full force of my cognitive process to directly scrutinize these behaviors.  However, these are hardly my only or even worst habits, so by the time it matters (later tonight), I will most likely be preoccupied with something else entirely.

This brings us to my first bad habit, I was up way too late doing absolutely nothing of any substantial value.  Until I finally collapsed from the sheer inability to continue doing nothing of value (playing some very stupid computer game that is utterly ridiculous, completely addictive, and a MASSIVE time sink).  My next bad habit, I have a tendency of having my phone with me when I sleep, most of the time it is even in the bed with me.   The last thing I look at before going to bed, the first thing I grab in the morning, and the only thing I reach for when I awake in the middle of the night.  So, as some may have gathered, I use my phone as my alarm clock (I have had alarm clocks in the past and it is just more convenient for me to use my phone).  Sometimes I even dream about my phone, but mostly just when the alarm is going off.  Which brings me to another bad habit, I either dream I am trying to shut it off and it is not working or I just incorporate the sound into my dream so that I can "ignore" it and continue the dream.  If that does not seem to work I usually just fumble around until I manage to press "dismiss" or "snooze".

Off-topic thought: After having said all that, I am starting to see an acceptable reason for me to have a "It's complicated relationship status" on facebook.

Back to this morning.  The last time I remember looking at my phone it was going on 3 am.  My alarm goes off at 6, except I turned it off on Saturday and there was no way I was setting it at 3 am.  So I woke up at 9 this morning.  That is not too big of a deal.  What was a big deal, a VERY BIG DEAL: sometime during the night I had inadvertently removed my posterior battery cover.  It has been getting looser.  It used to "snap" tightly into place, but sometimes it would be in a state of coming apart when I pulled it out of my pocket.  It would snap back in, no problem.  It no longer snaps, it simply...encounters slight resistance both ways.

Well after waking up and realizing that my phone was no longer whole, I set about doing everything I could to make things right again.  After about 20 minutes I said, maybe I should finish getting ready then worry about this.

I looked on the bed, under the bed, behind the bed.  I got down on both sides of the bed and looked under the bed.  I pulled the bed away from the wall.  How could this little piece of plastic disappear?  How could it vanish? It couldn't.  or could it?  I was starting to wonder.  Reality was a twisted blur that mimicked one of those sadistic dreams except no awful screaming tone mocking me, laughing at my feeble attempt to sleep just a little longer.

I started wondering what would life be like if I never found that piece.  Could I live with the thought of knowing my phone was incomplete?  Could my phone even be content in this persistent state?  Just as I was about to succumb to fate's desire, give up my search, I found it.  That beautiful little black piece of plastic, it managed to rest partially between the bed rail and the box spring, but far enough at the head of the bed that I had missed it.

The true question though is, do I learn from my behavior?

It took me an hour plus to type this, and I'm running late for a "class field trip".  The professor is paying to take us to an "emerging market" cuisine.  And he let us choose Yuki's (for those keeping track that is Japanese and they are considered an "emerged market").

A "mix-tape" of me

"I believe in music; the way that some people believe in fairy tales." ~ August Rush

Robin Hilton on music, "we believe it defines us — that music says something about who we are and what we believe, perhaps in ways more illuminating and honest than we could ever conjure on our own, since words alone often diminish the grand ideas and feelings we have inside."

I, too, believe.

This idea arose since a friend of mine, Lacy I am talking about you, likes to share music videos on facebook constantly.  That is not really my style.  I like to share music, but I am less inclined to do it on facebook.  Mostly because I feel like something not everyone wants to see is all the music I would post.  However, if you choose to come check it out here then I am satisfied that you are a willing participant.  As I start my journey down this path I do not know where it leads.  However, I can tell you what I am hoping and expecting.

About two hours of music that I am confident defines me.  Music from my life that takes me back.  Taking that into consideration, I am expecting to include music that was released at least five years ago or older.  It is not that I do not believe there is any defining music today, but it is hard to say just what music will stay with me forever without the benefit of the passage of time.  I will probably leave some basic comments on each selection.  So, kick-back, get comfortable, close your eyes, and prepare to sing to your heart's content:

Play on youtube.com

Side A

1. Sublime -- Santeria (3:18)
Great band, great song, fun to sing, and the video is actually good (which is just a bonus, normally I just listen anyway).

2. Barenaked Ladies -- Who needs sleep? (3:46)
I love BnL.  I wore Stunt out, playing it on repeat constantly.  It is a little known fact that my early internet alias (incognizant) was inspired by the song "When you dream".  Yes, I had to look up cognizant in the dictionary to know what it meant back then so I just thought it was cool (and now I have taken cognitive psychology, not so cool).  I did not use that song, here, because I could not find it in good quality and this song is a bit more upbeat which means it is fun to sing along with.

3. Semisonic -- DND (4:12)
Another great CD, that I listened to over and over again.  This is the group and the CD with "Closing Time" on it, but most people do not know how great the whole CD is.  Worth listening to; in-fact I couldn't decide which one of the not-so popular songs I wanted to put on my mix-tape, so I'll play another one later.

4. 311 -- Amber (2:59)
Honestly I do not remember how I found this song, but I know I liked it before it became popular.  The video has almost 7 million views on youtube and that is shocking to me.  I believe it was used in several movies, let me consult google.  Hmmm, okay wikipedia only says it was used in 50 First Dates, which I did know (I own the movie) but I thought there was another movie too.  I did not own the CD, I just downloaded the MP3 and listened to it all the time that way.

5. Stone Temple Pilots -- Interstate Love song (3:50)
Great song, do not remember ever seeing the video before making this post.  Not too fond of the video, but love listening to this song with the windows down or just out in the open air.

6. Creed -- Weathered (5:33)
I happen to like Creed.  I feel that they were tainted by the fact that there are a few of their songs that are overplayed.  I had a few CDs and I stopped listening to some of those songs myself, but they are still good songs.  Just not good enough to ignore the rest and not even the best of Creed, IMO.  I do not think this is one of those songs, actually this video only has about 10k hits and if the official video is on youtube I did not find it.

7. Taproot -- Poem (3:19)
Love this song.  Not really sure how I "found" it, but it was one of those I had in mp3 on my computer.  I am not even familiar with other Taproot songs.

8. Sister Hazel -- Starfish (4:27)
Listened to this CD over and over.  All good songs.  "All for you" is most popular, "Happy" is pretty amazing.  This song just demands to be listened to every once in a while.

9. Hootie and the blowfish -- Only wanna be with you (4:11)
I do not think I owned this CD, but everyone else had it.  I did not need it.  Love the song, not sure I ever saw the video though.  I could listen to the song more times than watch the video.  I prefer to sing "Time", but this song wins out for the lyrics.

10. StonESouR -- Bother (4:06)
This is a decent CD, iirc it took some time to like more than just a few songs.  If you haven't heard this song, you may have heard "Through glass"

11. Default -- Wasting my time (4:06)
I am pretty sure this one comes from MTV.  I also downloaded it as an MP3, but only after hearing it on MTV.  Never had the CD, I probably looked up other songs by them, but I no longer remember them.  This one sticks with me though.

12. Matchbox 20 -- Push (4:05)
Great CD.  This is another case of picking one to represent the many.  Yet no one song really does the whole album justice.

13. Staind -- Outside (4:56)
Downloaded the song, but I may have downloaded entire Staind albums.  This is definitely not the only good Staind song I remember, but it was one of my favorite.  "For you" is a great bad-mood song, I am sure most people have heard it!  I might have had a burnd copy of a Staind album.

14. Counting Crows -- Mr. Jones
Great CD.  I would sit and sing every song for hours and when the CD was over, well it was on repeat.  This is probably the most popular and it is one of the rare instances where I can overlook that.  This is one of those songs that if you interrupt it in my car, we start it over.

15. Tenacious D -- F'ck her gently (2:29)
I know it is vulgar.  Sorry.  Tenacious D is hilarious and it just happens to keep Side A of my mix-tape under 1-hour, by :12 seconds!

Side B

16. John Mayer -- Your body is a wonderland (4:17)
Pretty good CD and he has some good newer stuff too.  I actually just opened up a DVD type case that I have pictures on it to see what was in there and it was this CD, ironic.  I cannot remember which are the other really good songs from the titles, but they are all pretty good.  I am thinking this was the only really popular one from the titles, but that could be wrong.

17. Flogging Molly -- If I ever leave this world alive (2:56)
It's Flogging Molly and this song was on the P.S. I Love You soundtrack 'nuff said.

18. Dropkick Murphys -- I'm shipping up to Boston (2:45)
Heard the intro to this played tonight at the WKU spring red vs. white football game, at least I think it was this.  It was definitely the Dropkick Murphys.  Not my fav, but it's alright.

19. The All-American Rejects -- Swing, swing (3:30)
Bet you cannot help but swing.

20. Cherry Poppin' Daddies -- Zoot suit riot (3:53)
     Speaking of swinging.

21. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones -- The impression that I get (3:16)
It makes me wonder if I could.  I guess I better knock on wood.  Love the lyrics and well I am a bit of a sucker for non-traditional instruments in bands (there have been at least a few by now, I haven't been counting).  Plus the band appeared in Clueless, and I enjoyed watching that movie.  Mostly because Alecia Silverstone was hot and I would watch anything she was in.  I had Excess baggage too.

22. Butthole Surfers -- Pepper (4:09)
Not a big fan of the name or the cover art.  I also cannot remember if I actually liked any other songs.  This is one of those songs that I forget who sang it and what the title is and it is hard as hell to find it when I want to hear it.  I randomly found it just now as I saw the band name and I realized that they had a good song, but could not remember what it was.

23. Harvey Danger -- Flagpole sitta (3:39)
It's catchy and it was on one of the batman movie soundtracks I owned a few of the movies and just that soundtrack.

24. Sugar Ray -- Every morning (4:12)
I wouldn't know what to do with an Angel's halo either.  You know you have to make the instrumentals when you sing this one though.  Too funny.

25. Goo Goo Dolls -- Name (3:55)
This is my fave from the Goo Goo Dolls, in a list of fantastic songs.

26. Lifehouse -- Breathing (4:16)
Lifehouse has some good songs too.  Also, I just happen to love these lyrics.

27. Silverchair -- Miss you love (3:59)

28. Seven Mary Three (7M3) -- Lucky (3:59)
Great band.  Three CDs of theirs, I think that I had.  Pretty much every song is good.  Most people have heard either Cumbersome or Water's Edge or both.  Punch In, Punch Out was their song that I was first introduced to, it is an anthem!  My former co-worker, Josh Gunnels, and I would play it on the ride home from work.  I was too young to drive so he had to take me home.  Wherever you are in the world Josh, I hope you are well and thanks for introducing me to some great music.

29. Avril Lavigne -- I'm with you (3:45)
Beautiful Canadian girl.  Need I say more?

32. Green Day -- Nice guys finish last (2:49)

31. System of a Down -- Toxicity (3:44)
     Disorder!

32. Godsmack -- Sick of life (3:51)

Well that is actually 2 hours of music right there.  Unfortunately there is plenty more I would like to share and I actually added a bunch of videos to my playlist and forgot to save them so when I went back, starting over, not all of them got added back in.

33. Anna Nalick -- Breathe (5:08)
Used in A Lot Like Love and the lyrics are great.
34. Paula Cole -- Me (4:45)
35. Eve 6 -- Here's to tonight (4:03)
36. Jewel -- You were meant for me (3:43)
37. Breaking Benjamin -- Diary of Jane (3:28)
38. Seether -- Broken (4:22)
39. Semisonic -- Singing in my sleep (4:25)
40. Maroon 5 -- This Love (3:23)

Wow I should try to get a whole 24 hours of music or something crazy like that.  It would take forever to do that though (I am already tired).  Hopefully this brings some one a little enjoyment.

So glad playlists do not have a limit.  I had hundreds of mp3s on my computer and about as many CDs.

Fortune cookie prophesy

After class today, I ate Chinese food.  Obviously that gave me a lot to think about.  Fortune cookies are fascinating without considering the actual message on the little slip of paper.  That message is meant to provoke thought, I believe.  All in all, it is pretty dangerous.  Please my friends, partake of the fortune cookies responsibly.  No one needs to get hurt.

For the cookie itself, that has to be a strange existence if one were to consider it.  Truly think about it.  The sole purpose, raison d'être, is to be dismembered and devoured, leaving nothing but a tiny slip of paper with a message for the world (or the few people sitting at the table).  Actually that one slip of paper has the only message ever exhibited from that fortune cookie.  Is it any wonder we expect profound things on that tiny slip of paper.

In recent times, I have found disappointment.  Fortune cookies once gave tiny horoscopes or predictions.  Now they regularly dispense good advice.  Certainly, I am not the only person that cares.  Although, I am sure, there probably is not anyone that cares as much, but surely others do care.  I keep mine.  I have about ten fortunes in my wallet, from the last two or three years.  I do not date them although that might not be a bad idea and I rarely even go back and look at them.  There really is no reason to keep them, I do not keep records to know how many I have received and I feel I probably should have more.  One time I got three fortunes from one cookie.  Actually, now that I think about it I lost this one.  I did not put it in my wallet since I was planning on referencing it.  Not that it matters.  I remember the "fortune".  Everything else is just extra.

I find that silly.  I mean who can remember when they started showing up with lottery numbers on them, but at first it was kind of neat.  Not that anyone really believed those were lucky numbers.  I mean sure if you do not have any numbers to play and you want to play I am sure those numbers are as good as any.  Really though if the numbers were any good everyone that had a fortune cookie on a particular day would have the same numbers which then, since they are lucky everyone would win which would mean the pot would be split up and shared equally.  Which would be unlucky, I mean you get match six numbers and because of the hundreds of thousands of people that did the same, you get like two dollars.  I guess that is not bad for a one dollar ticket, but when you consider you had to pay for dinner to get your numbers then suddenly you are in the hole.

If anything the lotto numbers reduce the fortune cookie credibility.  I mean anyone can believe a fortune or at least agree that cookie has good advice, but there is obvious repercussions to trying to predict something that will happen and therefore provides a baseline to later assess the prediction.  This is probably why they started teaching people Chinese.  It is amazing that a fortune cookie can teach people to speak bad Chinese.

It is helpful.  If I ever need to say Gooseberry in Chinese, I will be ready.  You know it is useful since I can remember every time I have ever said Gooseberry in English; only once after reading it off a fortune cookie.  Although, it is a little concerning to me that the "English" version of the Chinese characters was using accents.  I mean we use those so often in English, I know what they are called.  Oh wait, I don't really know.  There was an i with an accent aigou (spelling? and if that's the same in English as in French, I don't know) alt + 141 mì also there was an a with a circumflex alt + 131 tâo.  Now that brings up another question.  Forget the fact that I don't know the international phonetic alphabet much at all, much less well enough to know how to pronounce these if fortune cookies even use itt. However, I have seen "tao" before so naturally I want to pronounce it the same despite the difference.  Is that even right? I realize there's no way for anyone to answer that because this is all text.  Nevertheless, one can see my confusion?

Finally, I could spend all day talking about what my fortune means and how in its simplicity it says even more.  How it connects with feelings and thoughts that preceded it and provide context.  I could say all that and more, but I would not be satisfied.  So without further adieu, I leave my fortune with you (do with it what you will):

Love.

After Basketball thoughts

I guess it is true what they say about exercise and memory/cognition.  Not that I have read what they say, but I may have heard about what they said.  Not that my extra brain power is typically put to good use nor is it now.  Thinking back though it is pretty frequently that I sit awake for hours after playing basketball to 10:00-11:00 o'clock at night just thinking about everything.

I still have a lot of writing to do for school.  I turned in something about 16 pages long and I said it should have been 30 pages long.  There was no way I was going to get 30 pages out of it and I am not really sure where I got that figure either.  There was an outline that suggested it should be around 15 pages I believe.  Anyway it is in the past.  I am done with it. Time to move on to another project.

This personal writing projects come to me all the time, but I rarely go through with them.  I was revisiting this "idea" one of my best professors suggested that his students write this autobiography of sorts.  I guess someone once wrote something Who I am. or something like that.  I never read it, but he brought it up several times.  He said of course we would have to come up with our own title.  I am a sucker for a good title.  That would be a good job for me, creating titles all day.  Of course, it is difficult to pat myself on the back for this when I do not always put the same thought into it.  For instance: this post! However, I do think that fairly often my titles are pretty good.  What do you think?

I frequently think a French title would be great.  However, writing an entire post in French would be great too.  Unfortunately, I am not quite to that point.  I was thinking about this for the title of my essay:  C'est qui je suis.  However, I was not entirely sure if that was proper French, so I googled it.  Turns out someone already used that for their blog and they are a pretty interesting person from what I read.  Normally I post a comment when I find myself on some random blog and I feel a little bad about not doing so this time.  I bookmarked it though so I have time to rectify this mistake.  Here's a link if anyone wants to check it out: C'est qui je suis

I got new shorts.  They have pockets, I am not a big fan of pockets in ball shorts.  They are all right though.  I fell asleep writing last night.  I have about an hour to get read and get to class.  Oh la la!
